People ages 65 and older—such as the majority of your Peoples Health patients—are at higher risk of developing complications from the flu. And for those with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and respiratory illnesses, the risk is even higher.
We encourage regularly educating patients about flu vaccination as their best protection against the flu.
The CDC suggests using a mnemonic tool called SHARE to help make strong vaccine recommendations and give important information about vaccination benefits.
SHARE reasons why the vaccine is right for the patient given the patient’s age, health status, lifestyle, occupation or other risk factors.
HIGHLIGHT positive experiences to reinforce the benefits of the vaccine and strengthen confidence in getting it.
ADDRESS vaccine questions and concerns in plain language around side effects, safety and effectiveness, for example.
REMIND patients that vaccines help protect them and their loved ones from serious illness and complications.
EXPLAIN the potential costs of getting the flu, including health effects, time lost and financial burdens, as well as the potential of spreading the illness to more vulnerable family or friends.
